Should the government raise taxes on the rich?

Australia currently has a progressive tax system whereby high income earners pay a higher percentage of tax than low income tax. A more progressive income tax system has been proposed as a tool towards reducing wealth inequality.

Italy’s Prime Minister Goes Mainstream

A few days ago, Italy’s right-wing prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, was campaigning for votes as a scrappy underdog, presenting herself as “that bitch Meloni.”Her rise owes much to her ability to please her party’s far-right base on identity issues such as Muslim immigration and same-sex parents, while simultaneously reassuring center-right voters that she is a safe pair of hands, including in managing Italy’s fragile finances. Her hybrid of right-wing culture war and establishment-friendly foreign and economic policies could become a model for other far-right parties in Europe that are looking to gain power and broader acceptance.She has followed broadly similar policies to Berlusconi, centered on trimming income taxes and welfare benefits, without pushing ambitious economic overhauls to boost Italy’s chronically low growth. Ironically, Meloni’s support remains solid even though voters think she has performed poorly on her signature issue: controlling immigration. She promised to stop migrants from crossing the Mediterranean from North Africa, but has found there is no easy way to do it.

Sunak offers tax breaks to landlords

Rishi Sunak will unveil tax breaks for landlords on Tuesday as he puts reducing the tax burden and boosting home ownership at the heart of the Conservative general election manifesto.The Telegraph can reveal that the Prime Minister will promise to scrap capital gains tax for landlords who sell their property to tenants. The scheme would last two years.Mr Sunak will also pledge a tax cut for 27 million households if he is re-elected by reducing employee National Insurance again, this time to 6 per cent.The return of the Help to Buy scheme and a vow to abolish stamp duty for first-time buyers on properties worth less than £425,000 will also be included in the manifesto.The unveiling of the manifesto, which is about 80 pages long, is one of the last major moments in the campaign calendar for the Tories to trigger a comeback before the general election on July 4.The policies are an attempt by Mr Sunak to return to traditional Tory strengths of cutting taxes and building homes, after years of a rising tax burden and housing shortages.

UK Leaders Clash Over Immigration and Taxes In Debate

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was deemed to have narrowly edged a fractious live television debate with Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer on Tuesday, dominated by the issues of tax and immigration. On climate change, Sunak said he had taken “bold” decisions that would mean Britain meets its obligations while protecting the budgets of hard-pressed families. Starmer vowed that Britain would “win the race” to develop renewable energy under a Labour government.Starmer said he would end “the chaos and division we’ve seen over the last 14 years”, trying to present his Tory opponent as out of touch with the country he governs: “He lives in a different world.”Sunak promised he would “cut your taxes, protect your pension and reduce immigration”, repeatedly hammering a heavily disputed claim that Labour would put up taxes by £2,000 for every working household. “With Keir Starmer, apart from higher taxes, you don’t know what you’ll get and neither does he,” Sunak claimed. His punchy performance raised Tory spirits but it remains to be seen if it can transform the campaign.
